How to light your candle:

Always trim the wick and check for debris.

Before you light a candle, always trim the wick to ¼ inch and remove any debris left in the wax pool such as wick trimmings or matches. Any debris will add more fuel to the candle than it’s designed to handle. Too much fuel can cause the flame to unexpectedly flare up or even start a small fire near the candle flame. Wicks that are left long or crooked can cause uneven burning, dripping, flaring. Trimming wicks will help prolong the life of your candle. Your candles will burn up to 25% longer if you trim the wick every couple of hours.

Get it right the first time.

Just like the first cut is the deepest, that first burn is the most important. Candles should burn one hour for every 1 inch in diameter of the actual candle size. For example, a candle that is 2 inches across should burn for 2 hours. If a candle is not burned for long enough to allow the wax to liquefy or to melt from edge to edge of the container, it will create a “memory ring.” Once a candle has a “memory ring,” it will continue to tunnel for the life of the candle.

Don’t keep candles burning for longer than indicated on the manufacturer’s instructions.

Burning a candle for too long will cause carbon to collect on the wick, leading it to “mushroom.” The wick will then become unstable and produce a dangerously large flame. Plus, your candle will start to smoke and release soot. Avoid this by always following the manufacturer’s instructions. In general, it is recommended that candles do not burn for longer than four hours and cool for at least two hours before relighting.

Sage / Palo Santo

Smudging has been traditionally used to safeguard against negativity that could interfere with sleep. Some research suggests that sage contains compounds that could help ease insomnia. Classic garden sage (Salvia officinalis) is sometimes burned like white sage. It's also been used to improve sleep and soothe anxiety.

There are several purported benefits of using sage internally.3 Note that while there is some research evidence to support these benefits, it remains preliminary; more research is needed.

  • Relieving headache and sore throat pain
  • Reducing oxidative stress in the body
  • Protecting against free radical damage
  • Reducing inflammation
  • Protecting against bacterial and viral infections
  • Supporting digestion
  • Protecting against memory loss
  • Reducing depression or improving mood

Using Sage for Mental Health

Overall, not enough research has been conducted on the use of sage for its proposed mental health benefits. However, based on preliminary research, there may be support for the use of sage for mood and memory.

A 2005 study showed that common sage oil improved memory and cognition (thinking ability). In addition, increased dosages were related to improvements in mood and feeling alert, calm, and content.4 Other research suggests that active compounds in sage protect against neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's.

Smudging Step-by-Step

To begin, you will need something in which to burn the sage. This could be an incense tray or a bowl to catch the ashes as the sage burns. You could also purchase a sage burner. Fill it with earth or sand. Don't use a flammable container, and keep water on hand.

  • Open a window or door before you start burning the sage. This allows the smoke to exit your house.
  • Put the sage in the burning container and light it. Let it burn for several seconds and then blow it out so that it keeps smoking. If it stops emitting smoke, try lighting it again.
  • If you are using the sage for spiritual purposes, set an intention for what you are doing. For example, you might say "Let this be the day that changes start to take place."
  • Walk to each room you wish to purify and let the smoke enter it. Do not allow any space to fill with too much smoke. Avoid inhaling the smoke directly.
